Paris Salon, sponsored by French government and the Academy of Fine art, took place annually. The year 1863 was a hallmark in the salon history. Among the more than 5000 artworks submitted , the rejected rate is unbelievably high. The resulting uproar in the press and by refused artists was fierce. However, what is more unusual was that the king intervened and ordered a Salon des Refusés to be installed adjacent to the regular exhibition.
